Summer Fun: Farmer’s Market Scavenger Hunt

FM_purplecabbage_webAll of the kids in my cooking camp love visiting our local Farmer’s Market.  Dressed in matching yellow camp shirts, we brave the 1/2 mile walk to the Civic Center, where we shop for ingredients and nibble our way through the market.  Once we arrive, our groups scatter – each armed with a shopping list, reusable bags and a list of scavenger hunt questions that get them talking to the farmers and seeking out new and interesting ingredients.

Before school starts, gather your kids and take them to the farmer’s market.  They will love to taste the fresh and seasonal produce.  They might also enjoy a little detective work…

Farmer’s Market Scavenger Hunt

  1. Find a yellow fruit or vegetable.  What is it?
  2. Find a purple food with an interesting shape.  What is it?
  3. Find a red food that is bigger than your fist.  What is it?
  4. Find a green food that you have not tasted before.  What is it?
  5. Taste an organic strawberry and one that conventionally grown (not organic).  Compare the flavor.  Which one tastes better?
  6. Find something that grows on a vine:
  7. Find something that grows underground:
  8. Find something that grows on a tree:
  9. Ask 3 people if a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.
  10. What are two examples of a “stone fruit?”
  11. Taste them and say which one you liked better.
  12. Ask 3 vendors what time they woke up this morning…
…and how long it took them to get here (time or distance)

  • What a fun idea! I have printed your scavenger hunt to try tomorrow on our visit to the Farmers Market with our four kids!

  • What a super-fun idea! I can’t wait until my son (10 m.o. now) is old enough to have scavenger hunts at the farmer’s market. Last time we went he pulled tomato samples down all over me. So that was fun too. : D

  • Heather – please check back and let me know how it went with your kids. Let me know, too, if you added any new questions.

Kim – toddlers are hilarious at the farmer’s market. I went with a friend a few months ago, and her son took a huge head of lettuce from a vendor and then carried it across the market before his mom noticed. She had to go all the way back and apologize for her klepto child – but we joked that it would be the most affordable way to shop there!

  • so much fun!!!
