Loki Fish Co. A Sustainable Fishing Family
I love drawing connections between food and family. Our family enjoys eating together, especially when the seasonal bounty comes from our farmer’s market (and now, even from our own back yard!) Loki Fish Co. has taken it one step further – they have even mastered the art of working together with their families to share their Alaska and Washington Wild Salmon with others.
Loki Fish Co. has been Certified Sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. I know – labels don’t necessarily
mean anything, but I was pleased to discover that a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification is science-based and applies to wild-capture fisheries only. Certified fisheries meet three main requirements:
- Their fishing activity must be at a level that is sustainable for the fish population.
- Their operations must maintain the structure, productivity, diversity and function of the ecosystem on which the fishery depends.
- They must have effective management and respond to changing circumstances and maintain sustainability.
Equally important to their sustainable fishery practices is the fact that these products taste delicous! Our children love salmon, but I haven’t been buying much of it lately. It can just be too darned expensive. Plus, with all of our childrens’ activities, we don’t always eat our groceries when we plan to. But Loki’s canned pink salmon and smoked salmon are quite affordable, especially when you consider the quality of the food and the attention to preserving its habitat! They are also convenient – both last until you are ready to eat them.
We did a tasting with my parents, and everyone really enjoyed the smoked salmon. It tasted delicious with a bit of cream cheese on a cracker or plain bruschetta. And tonight, we enjoyed a salad (with greens picked right from the garden!), topped with canned pink salmon and a home-made herbed vinaigrette.
I highly recommend Loki Fish Co., both for their eco-friendly practices and for the quality of their delicious salmon. Their products can be purchased in their new online store.
