Animal Themed Cooking Classes for Kids…and a Contest!
As with many teachers, I have been working on curriculum for the upcoming school year. I have been perusing the Content Standards for California Public Schools (not exactly summer reading that I would recommend!) and am now working on some fun themes for the actual classes.
We have some great ones in the works, such as an entire 8-12 week series devoted to Recipes from Books and Movies. Each week, we will focus on recipes that relate to a particular book or movie. Within that theme, we will be cooking healthy and seasonal foods from all over the world.
I am currently working on a series with an Animal Theme and could use your help. The class series will probably be called something like: It’s a Zoo Out There or My Kitchen Is Full of Animals. (Any other catchy ideas would be appreciated, of course!). In the series, we will make some treats for animals but we mostly want to focus on foods that our students and their families can enjoy.
But where I could REALLY use your help is to find recipes for real food that have animals in the name. We have a few good ones already:
- Hush Puppies
- Scrambled Egg Nests
- Tiger Prawns
- Chocolate “Moose”
- Goose-pacho (get it?)
- Skunk Cabbage Slaw
- Chicken Little
- Pigs in a Blanket (although we will modify this so that it is healthier - perhaps with puff pastry and chicken apple sausage)
While we will occasionally make sweet treats in class, I prefer to keep our classes healthy and focused on seasonal produce.
Send in any GREAT Themes for a series of cooking classes, Animal Themes and Animal Named Recipe Ideas (with explanations to clarify, if necessary) and be entered into a contest to win a reusable Boon Snack Ball. Be sure to let us know if you think of other Class Themes that you think our students would enjoy. Entries will be reviewed on July 30.
Thanks for your help!

aren’t hush puppies just deep fried dough.

Hi!
Yes, they are… But there are definitely measurement skills and textures that the kids can work with to make the recipe.
Not exactly the healthiest recipe to make, huh? But I do love that there is an animal in the name without just making something up
Have any other ideas?
Thanks,
Michelle

How about “Ants on a Log”? It is a celery stick filled with peanut butter or cream cheese with raisins on top.

Hi Krista,
Thanks for your feedback. Ants on a Log is a fun recipe to do with pre-schoolers, but most of my classes are with older kids (ages 6-12). So, with them, I try to do recipes that teach them more advanced culinary skills and use a variety of recipes from around the world.

How about “animal cookies”?—–rolled out cookie dough, cut out with animal-shaped cookie cutters (large or small—–there are lots of choices out there!). I’ve done this with my children, and I use whole wheat flour with honey for the sweetener, so these cookies are always “healthy”! You can always frost them with powder sugar frosting and sprinkles, if you want a sweeter taste. But I think they are good plain, too.

Hi Mary Jo,
Thanks for visiting my blog - Great idea for the animal cookies
I have been on vacation - so that is why I couldn’t respond sooner.
Take care and I hope you visit again!
