In honor of Earth Day, I held a special cooking class for 8 and 9 year olds in which we discussed sustainability, the benefits of organics and what it means for our food to travel from farm to table.  The kids were surprised to learn that many of the fruits found in our local Whole Foods are not organic, and come all the way from South America and other countries.

When the parents came to pick up their children, the room was filled with the buzz of kids rushing to tell their parents what they had learned and how they should be reading more labels on the foods that they buy.  I had to stop and laugh when I overheard a 9 year old girl telling her mom that some of the grapes in Whole Foods “come all the way from Kwanza.”

At least she got the idea.  Kwanza sounds like it would be far away!
